Stefan began his Ph.D. in January 2009. Although some of the details are still to be resolved, he is studying phylogeography and local adaptation in prickly sculpin ( Cottus asper ). Prickly sculpin are found along the western coast of North America, from Alaska to California, largely west of the Continental Divide. Despite its broad distribution and interactions with threespine stickleback, we know relatively little about this species (see also here and here ). Much of the published work to date has focused on interactions between prickly sculpin and coastrange sculpin (e.g., White & Harvey 1999 ).
