We continue to the quiet Bay of Guanaqueros to observe networks of bobbers floating out beyond the breakers (photo stop). These mark the suspended cultivators where the juvenile scallops feed from natural plant plankton and small particles of debris suspended in the water. Our first stop will be at the scallop cultivating laboratories.
From Guanaqueros we will continue south to Tongoy, where we will visit another scallop cultivation project, learning more about the raising and exportation of the northern scallop. However, our focus in Tongoy will be the Foundation Chile's successful project with the adaptation and cultivation of the Turbot, or European flounder. We will take a guided tour of the site with a project expert. After learning about the Turbot, we will discover a Northern Catholic University project based on the description and protection of the “macha” ( Mesodesma donacium ), one of the most harvested marine resources of the Coquimbo Region. During the early afternoon we will enjoy lunch at a typical seafood restaurant.
We will return to your hotel in the early evening.
